Fab Five Faves – April 1st Edition

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Hello Friends of the Bambino!

Welcome back to our fair-weather friend, Spring – you’ve been gone for too long.  In your honor, a Fab Five Faves dedicated to some fun finds:

1.  WonderToast Toddler Tees ($30)

  • So, they’re not the cheapest tees around.  But you get what you pay for, and with WonderToast, that’s a lot: Fairly-traded 100% SKAL-certified organic cotton.  Low-impact, azo-free dyes and water-based inks.  Durable double-stitched bottom hem.  Combed for softness and manufactured by an ethical, sweatshop-free outfit in Chennai, India.  Plus, the coolest kid on the block.   (For cool babies, also available as onesies.)

2.  California Baby Natural Bug Repellent Spray ($13)

  • What’s the point of fighting off bug bites if you’re spraying harmful chemicals on your kids’ arms in the process?  So pick up some of Cal Baby’s all-natural, DEET-free bug repellent and safely fend off mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, biting flies and vampires.

3.  Tree Blocks ($26-$40)

  • Forget those cookie-cutter blocks sitting in a corner of the playroom – unlock imagination with Tree Blocks.   Kids love creating all sorts of original structures with these unusually shaped, sustainably sourced wood pieces.  Just choose barked or barkless, and let yours go to work.
  • What, cleaning grimy, moldy tubs isn’t your idea of a good time?  Hey, don’t blame us.  We’re just reporting the facts, and your fellow FFF readers are apparently big fans.  (Qualifies for our BabyGanics Buy 2 Get 25% off promotion.)
5.  Green Toys EcoSaucer Flying Disc ($8)

  • Whether you’ve got a budding Ultimate Frisbee player on your team or simply a casual thrower, Green Toys’ EcoSaucer is just the right fit.  Made in California from 100% recycled milk jugs, this funky green flying machine is perfectly sized for little ones (and their flying dogs).

Speaking of milk…

Did you know: that organic milk often contains more Conjugate Linoleic Acids (CLAs) than conventional milk?  Don’t worry, that’s a good thing, because CLAs are “good fats” which are correlated with decreased risk for heart disease and diabetes.  Just one more reason to make sure your kids are getting the good stuff.

  • Fav Five Faves – March 19th Edition

    Friday, March 19th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

Once again you’ve voted with your feet, and we’re here to share the results.  That’s right, it’s a brand new Fab Five Faves on a gorgeous Friday:

    1.  miYim Organic Lovie Blankies ($15)

    • A perfect launch.  Just introduced at GB this week, miYim’s adorable organic Lovies are on top of the world.  Whether monkey, giraffe, elephant, bunny or frog, they deliver the perfect combination for a comforting bedtime routine: cute, colorful and cuddly.
    2.  Badger SPF 30 Sunscreen (sale price 7.95; normally $14.95)

    • A top pick of the Environmental Working Group, Badger offers natural and water-resistant broad spectrum UVA-UVB protection.  If the sun is starting to shine in your neck of the woods, it’s time to stock up on the cheap.
    3.  Ecotots Surfin’ Project Table ($225 + free shipping)

    • Putting the fun in function, Ecotots makes unique kids’ furniture that delivers strong value backed by strong values.  Available in four colors, the Surfin’ Project Table is guaranteed to last a lifetime.  Made from eco-friendly Birch, it has a durable, non-toxic finish and assembles in minutes with no-tools or hardware.  Paired with Ecotots’ Surfin Stools, it’s a perfect match.
    • Since switching to Dandelion’s toddler bowls in our house, the kids won’t let us give them cereal in anything else.  And since they’re made from corn in an environmentally gentle fashion, these bright yellow favorites are super-green.
    5.  Erba Organics Diaper Cream ($14)

    • Like an MMA fighter who combines all sorts of wicked moves, Erba’s organic diaper cream kicks some butt.  As the aloe base goes to work soothing chafed skin, beeswax and zinc create a protective barrier to combat irritation and wetness.  Meanwhile, shea butter moisturizes as echinacea, calendula and anti-inflammatory lavender join forces to reduce any lingering discomfort.  Let’s just say your kid’s diaper rash will go down harder than Kimbo Slice.

Did you know: that there may be unsafe levels of arsenic in your child’s apple juice? (We agree, the fact that some level of arsenic is permissible strikes us as a concern too.)  A recent independent study commissioned by Florida’s St. Petersburg Times revealed that more than one-quarter of apple juices tested – including a popular organic brand – contained levels of arsenic that even the notoriously permissive FDA would find troubling.  Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “think before you drink.”

  • Fab Five Faves – March 5th Edition

    Friday, March 5th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

It’s baa-ack…your Fab Five Faves that is, with a look at the most loved items over the past 2 weeks:

    1.  Sprig Hollow Dragonfly’s Heli-Scoopter (sale price $9.95; normally $15)

    • As you know, Sprig Toys specializes in making truly innovative non-toxic toys, and here is just one more example of the company’s ingenuity.  The Heli-Scoopter is a 5 in 1 sand/dirt/water toy that’s great for both indoor and outdoor use, so rain, shine or bathtime, it will keep your active child flying high.

    • To paraphrase Jackie Wilson, your love keeps lifting BabyGanics higher and higher.  Not sure what you’ve been feeding your little ones lately (we kid, we kid), but it seems there’s been a growing need for this fantastic air freshener/odor remover.  And with our BabyGanics sale still in full swing, this baby might just reach the top of the charts.
    3.  VMV Hypoallergenics Gift Set (sale price $60; normally $75)

    • Give this gift and you’ll have a friend for life.  Why?  Because VMV makes the most lust-worthy body care products around – the first to be rated VH-65, meaning they are free of all 65 known allergens.  Inside this gift set – beautifully packaged in a hand-made cream-and-chocolate box with an espresso-colored bow — you’ll find carry-on approved travel sizes of VMV’s complete line of baby products, plus a set of Hypoallergenic Bonnet & Booties.  We’ve never put this item on sale before, so here’s your opportunity to take advantage of us.
    • Whether you’re an everyday germaphobe (like me) or getting ready for a family vacation (GERM-any anyone?), Clean Well’s travel size hand sanitizers – offered in Original Scent or Orange Vanilla – are just the thing to beat back all those evil little fever-inducing meanies.  Also available in a 6 oz. spray pump and pocket wipes.
    5.  DANO2 Ducki Bath Toy/Teether ($8)

    • If bathing and teething are part of your daily routine, well, maybe you should see a doctor about the teething.  But if you’ve got a child who meets that description, then you’ve got to get him a Ducki.  Offered in 4 cheerful pastels – Caribbean (blue), Mint, Raspberry and Citrus (yellow) – Ducki is cool as a cucumber and free of BPA, phthalates, lead and PVC.

Speaking of rubber ducks, we just had a chance to dive into Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Dangers of Everyday Things, a book recently released in the U.S. by Rick Smith (Executive Director of Environmental Defence Canada) & Bruce Laurie (a Canadian environmental activist) about the real-world impacts of exposure to toxic chemicals in everyday products.  It’s a freakishly magnetic read.  Over the course of a few days the authors intentionally expose themselves to all manner of toxins – from BPA and phthalates to teflon and canned tuna – in order to determine the chemicals’ adverse effects.  Though the experiment may be a little bit unscientific, the book contains some compelling revelations and we urge you to check it out.

  • Fab Five Faves – Feb. 19th Edition

    Friday, February 19th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

As you know, last week the Fab Five Faves took a short vacation while its understudy – Greeno Bambino’s first survey of 2010 – got a chance to shine.  The response was tremendous and tremendously enlightening.  Thanks so much to all those who offered their thoughts; we are working hard to implement your super suggestions.

Now, on to the good stuff.  In this week’s edition of Fab Five Faves, we’ve got fun, sun and a little something for everyone:

    1.  Green Toys Jump Rope ($10)

    • Made from 100% recycled milk jugs, Green Toys’ jump rope is a hopeful reminder that Spring is on its way.
    • Whether heading out of town or searching for a perfect little gift, this is a pick that won’t let you down.  Inside a reusable mandarin orange trimmed zipper case you’ll find travel size containers of Erba’s chemical-free body wash, shampoo, body lotion and diaper cream.
    3.  California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion (sale price $11.95; normally $18.50)

    • Unbeatable protection, unbeatable price.  What else is there to say?
    4.  3 Sprouts Organic Storage Bins ($38)

    • 3 Sprouts’ adorable storage bins are one of our hottest-selling items virtually every week.  They’re the perfect antidote to a messy playroom, and a fitting gift for kids of all ages.
    5.  Thermos Foogo Sippy Cups (sale price $9.95; normally $15)

    • We know how costly it can be to purchase the everyday stuff, so we like to periodically offer deep discounts on staple items like Thermos’ Foogo sippy cups.  Pink or blue, with or without handles, these are among the most sturdy, well-made sippy cups on the market, and we think you’ll find our current sale price hard to beat.
If you missed our recent blog post about efforts to overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act, please click on over.  It’s a quick, interesting read and, for those so inclined, gives you an opportunity to support the passage of stricter limitations on the use of chemicals in children’s products.

Once again, a big thanks to everyone who participated in our survey and to all of you who supported relief efforts in Haiti over the past few weeks by purchasing Miss Brittany’s Organic Preschool Fundough Kit.

  • Fab Five Faves – Feb. 5th Edition

    Friday, February 5th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

We’re a bit conflicted about February.  Spring is close enough to start dreaming about, and the weather is still cold enough for giant snowballs and supreme skiing.  On the other hand, Spring seems painfully far away and it’s so cold that the last thing we want to do is be outside.  But one thing we’re not conflicted about is this week’s Fab Five Faves, because you folks have been ringing up some of our personal favorites:

    1.  Clean Well Antibacterial Foaming Hand Wash

    • Clean Well makes such delicious smelling soaps that we keep begging them to go into the food business.  Alas, they’re sticking to what they know best: offering up eye-catching antibacterial soaps and sanitizers at unbeatable prices.  No more begging your kids to wash their hands after a breakfast of pancakes and maple syrup.  (Speaking of which, who thought it was a good idea to make such a sweet treat so sticky?  Really.  I’d like to have a word with them.)
    • Some people are just more comfortable with a clear bottle, and that’s cool.  But those of you who’ve given the Safe Starter a shot have been coming back for more.  Featuring non-leaching, food-grade stainless steel and encased in an easy-grip, insulating non-toxic silicone sleeve (which may be left on during heating), this dishwasher safe standout is available in blue, green and pink, in both 5 oz. and 9 oz. versions.
    3.  BabyGanics Loads of Love Laundry Detergent

    • Psst, did you hear?  We’re so sure you’ll love BabyGanics line of non-toxic cleaning products that we’re offering 25% off when you buy any 2 (or more).  Loads of Love is a 3X concentrated, odor-eating, grass-stain-defeating, clothes-cleaning powerhouse.  Good for 35 loads, it rinses completely free for use with cloth diapers.
    4.  Supergoop! Doctor T’s SPF 30 Quickstick

    • Some of you are lucky enough to be planning a vacation to a warm-weather paradise, while others had the foresight to live where the sun shines year-round.  Whichever camp you fall into, lots of you are taking advantage of our winter sale on sunscreens to stock up on this go-anywhere stick of 100% natural protection from Supergoop!
    5.  Elsie’s Original All-Natural Germ Fighter Spray

    • If there’s one item in the store we’ve always expected to sell more of, it’s Elsie’s All-Natural Germ Fighter Spray.  Why?  Because it’s a quick and effective germ and odor fighter with a beautiful lavender scent that you can spray on toys, highchairs, diaper pails and anywhere else you think germs may be lurking.  Well, it seems people are finally catching on.

That’s 5 faves to fit any fancy…We hope you’ve found something you like.

By the way, for those Adiri Natural Nurser fans still lamenting the company’s closing, we have a few bottles left, so catch ‘em while you can.

Finally, just a simple reminder that you earn GreenoGreen points redeemable for discounts on future purchases every time you shop at Greeno Bambino.  It’s automatic and hassle-free.

Keep your eyes peeled for a last-minute Valentine’s Day special early next week!

  • Fab Five Faves – Jan. 29th Edition

    Friday, January 29th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

We’ve got favorites to suit every flavor – from fun to fragrant and furnishings to funtainers.  So come along now, let’s have a look at this week’s Fab Five Faves…because there’s nothing wrong with being popular:

    1.  Green Toys Tool Set

    • Who said it’s not cool to be a tool?  This adorably-packaged 14-piece set – crafted from 100% recycled milk jugs – will help your kid tackle home improvement projects big and small.
    • Shower (er, bathe) your kid with love this Valentine’s Day with Cal Baby’s special blend of ylang ylang, sweet orange and pesticide-free essential oils.  A bubbly treat, even if you have no clue what ylang ylang is.  (Some say it possesses the fragrant scent of custard.  Yum, custard.)
    3.  Ecotots Surfin’ Growth Chart

    • We love Ecotots’ U.S. designed and made furniture for it’s ease of assembly, durability and timeless style.  This surfboard-shaped growth chart (offered in four colors) is a super-cool addition that will liven up any kids’ room.
    4.  Dandelion ReUsable Forks & Spoons (8 Pack)

    • We’ve been shipping lots of Dandelion lately, and we think we know why…it’s well-designed, made for everyday use, snappy-looking and really affordable.  This set of forks and spoons are made primarily from corn and suitable for all your little ones. (The forks actually work without being sharp – imagine that!)
    5.  Thermos Funtainer Cool Camo Straw Cup

    • Thermos’ Funtainer straw cups are prized for their durability, insulation, non-toxicity and dishwasher-safe build.  This spunky pink and purple camo version has always been a favorite, but emblazoned with a silver heart and the word “love,” it’s been elevated to must-have status in advance of this Valentine’s Day.

Gotta run; our warehouse just received a new shipment of clothing from Parade Organics and I’m jonesing for a look.  We’ll be sharing them with you real soon.  (I know, I’m such a tease.)

  • Fab Five Faves – Jan. 22nd Edition

    Friday, January 22nd, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

To finish out your week, we’re bringing you another edition of the populist Fab Five Faves newsletter from Greeno Bambino, highlighting the 5 most popular items of the week as selected by you, our favorite fans:

    1.  Sam and Bellie Activity Apron/Smock

    • Another brilliant offering from Sam and Bellie, these multifunctional aprons/smocks are equally at home in the kitchen and the playroom.  Available in three designs (Roadway, pictured here, Airplanes and Birds & Owls), they have a convenient tri-pocket across the front for holding all manner of supplies for your busy little boys and girls.
    • These teether rings were the first creation of the innovative family-driven design team behind Dano2, and they’re as good as ever.  Crafted from medical grade plastics are three individual teething rings of varying color, size and flexibility, all packaged in a compact translucent holding case.
    3.  Green to Grow Baby Bottles

    • Green to Grow’s sturdy, adorable baby bottles (offered in both 5 oz. and 9 oz. and regular- and wide-neck versions) have always been a steady fan favorite.  But since we put them on sale last week (not just any sale, but a super-triple-fantastic sale), they’ve positively flown off the shelves.
    4.  Silibibs

    • Elegantly simple, Silikids’ hypoallergenic silicone bibs (get them in red, blue or green) with a quick-snap two-position closure are great in the house and even better on-the-go…roll ‘em up small and wipe ‘em clean quickly.  Best of all – they’re dishwasher and washer/dryer safe.
    5.  Erba Organics Baby Shampoo

    • The husband and wife behind Erba Organics are dedicated to creating top-notch organic body care products for kids, and their everyday shampoo is a home run.  An organic aloe base combines with the natural cleansing properties of oats and olive oil to create a rich lather, organic lavender and organic chamomile soothe before bedtime, and organic mandarin leaves seal the deal.

    Three more quick hits today:

    • If you haven’t heard, GB and Miss Brittany’s Fundough have joined forces to donate $10 from each sale of Miss Brittany’s Organic Preschool Fundough Kit to UNICEF’s relief efforts in Haiti.  So pick some up for your favorite kid, won’t ya?  It’s like giving two gifts at once.
    • We really love BabyGanics’ household cleaning products, and we know you’ll love them too.  But in case our recommendation just isn’t enough to convince you, we’re offering a great (temporary) deal: Get 25% off everything BabyGanics when you purchase any 2 or more BabyGanics products.  Try it – you’ll like it.
    • Did you know that you earn GreenoGreen points redeemable for discounts on future purchases every time you shop at Greeno Bambino?  It’s automatic and hassle-free.
That’ll do it…Have a wonderful weekend party parents!

  • Fab Five Faves – Jan. 15th Edition

    Friday, January 15th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

If you’re into numerology, you may know that some interpret “5″ as being the most unpredictable of all numbers.  We’re no experts in this area, but based on what we’ve seen since the launch of Fab Five Faves, we’d have to agree…the most popular products of this week are all over the map.  Let’s take a look see:

    1.  Chan Pie Gnon Rattle Key Teether

    • If nothing excites your child’s taste buds more than a salad of chanterelles and portobellos, then this is the teether for him.  No, wait, that can’t be right.  Let’s try this again…These little mushroom-shaped teething buddies are pure magic.  (Yeah, that’s better.)  Sporting vibrant colors and a variety of textures, this teether/rattle combo is a perfect chomping companion.
    • These striking, easy-grip, silicone-covered glass bottles from Lifefactory (formerly Babylife) make a super choice for an everyday baby bottle or a gorgeous gift.  Offered in two sizes and six colors, there’s one here to quench any baby’s thirst.
    3.  Bambu Kids in the Kitchen Tools Set

    • This beautifully made, fully functional set of kid-sized bamboo kitchen tools have been getting tons of use from my 3-year-old boy during this wicked winter.  Looks like he’s not alone, as they’ve been finding their way into lots of other kids’ kitchens during the past week.
    4.  Babyganics Stain, Stain, Go Away Stain Remover

    • You may recall that we recently concluded an exhaustive search for the most effective non-toxic household cleaners, and Babyganics came up aces.  Well, one of our personal favorites in the Babyganics line has begun to gain lots of other fans.  We’re thinking it’s gotta to be the shoes.  Or maybe it’s just the mad versatility, like removing deep stains from not just clothing, but carpets, rugs, bedding, upholstered furniture and other fabrics too.  (Nah, it’s probably the shoes.)
    5.  Dandelion ReUsable Divided Toddler Plates (2 Pack)

    • Sometimes a person or object has such an identifiable trait that it comes to be defined by it: Like B.B. King and soul, the Egyptian pyramids and mystery, or The Situation and cheesiness (come on, if you’re not watching Jersey Shore you’re truly missing out).   Well, Dandelion’s ReUsable plates don’t have that kind of thing going for it.  They’re just good.  And people like ‘em.  Check ‘em out and so will you.

A couple more notes before we head into the bliss of another icy weekend (cue laughter from L.A.):

    • We’ve got some good news for those of you eagerly awaiting the arrival of WonderToast Toddler Tees…they’re here!  Fans of WonderToast already know this delicious little character and his wordy ways from WonderToast’s awesome short- and long-sleeve onesies.  And now toddlers can enjoy the worldly wordsmith too!  Get yours here.
    • If you haven’t already heard about out our brand spankin’ new GreenoGreen Rewards Program, it’s an easy peasy way to save.  Bottom line for those who like to cut through the clutter: from now on every time you shop greenobambino.com, you’ll earn GreenoGreen points to apply towards future purchases.  If you like details, catch ‘em here.
To borrow a line from our favorite little friend, Porky Pig – That’s all folks!

  • Fab Five Faves – Jan. 7th Edition

    Thursday, January 7th, 2010

    Hello Friends of the Bambino!

Hope your new year is off to a great start.  If not, perhaps 2010’s first edition of Fab Five Faves will warm you up.
Let’s sneak a peek at the 5 most popular items of the year’s opening week.  (Hey, Avatar’s got nothing on these picks, give or take a billion dollars.)  From the looks of it, cozy, calm and comforting are the trends of the moment:
    1.  3 Sprouts Organic Hooded Bath Towels

    • Always adorable, always popular.  From the artisan designers of Canada’s 3 Sprouts, these towels are highly giftable (yep, giftable is a word – go look it up) and available in 7 different animal/color combinations.  Nothing beats stepping out of a warm bath into the loving arms of a warm hug.
    • Whether soaps, shampoos, lotions or bubble baths, California Baby’s products are dependable for delivering unique formulations and strong value.  One of our new-ish favorites is this Overtired & Cranky Bubble Bath.  If wicked winters, early mornings and sleepless nights are making you irritable, just think of how your kids feel.  Help ‘em out with a dose of goodness.
    3.  Natursutten Pacifier

    • Slightly funky color?  Perhaps.  Soothing, non-toxic and allergen-free?  Most definitely.  Natursutten pacifiers are made from natural rubber and are completely free of the nasty bits such as BPA, phthalates, parabens, PVC and artificial coloring.  (That amber glow is 100% natural.)  Available in two sizes.
    4.  VMV Hypoallergenics Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm

    • If you’re a fan of VMV, you already know that it’s impossible to heap too much praise upon these expertly crafted products.  Free of all known allergens, Boo-Boo Balm is a moisturizing, superheroic salve that provides instant relief from eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, wounds, cuts, grazes, insect bites and minor burns, while fighting infections in its free time.
    5.  Green to Grow Re-Useful Baby Cloths (3-Pack)

    • Offered in five color combinations, these are the dreamiest multi-purpose cloths you can find.  (Yes, you have been dreaming of multi-purpose cloths…you just don’t remember.)  We love to use them as washcloths, but they’re just as great for mealtime as they are for bathtime.  Crafted from incredibly soft, fair trade, sustainably grown 100% organic combed cotton, they’re a crowd-pleaser.

That’s a wrap on this week’s Fab Five Faves.  Keep your eyes peeled early next week for a special announcement, because we have a new trick up our sleeve that we think you’ll be really excited about.  Hope you can handle the suspense.

  • Fab Five Faves – Dec. 18th Edition

    Friday, December 18th, 2009
    Hello Friends of the Bambino!
Welcome to the pre-Christmas edition of our weekly newsletter, Fab Five Faves.  With the holidays upon us, this past week has been all about three things: toys, toys and more toys.  So if any of you last-minute gift-givers are looking for something special, here are our 5 most popular items of the past week:
    1.  Sprig Rally Racer

    • Sprig’s classic no-battery, kinetic-energy-powered Rally Racer is always a fan favorite.  Bonus: smells so good.  Like a woodshop.  Really.  (Rally Racer’s yellow cousin, the Baja Scout, is equally sweet.)
    • Offered in three varieties (Birds & Owls, pictured here; Roadway; and Airplanes), Sam and Bellie’s chalkmats are the perfect companion for eating on the go.  One side is a beautifully printed placemat; flip it over to reveal a reusable chalkboard surface to keep little ones busy while waiting for their food.
    3.  Sophie the Giraffe Teether

    • Both a teether and a squeak toy, Sophie is equally loved by girls and boys and one of our most consistently popular items.  Made of natural rubber in the French Alps since 1961, Sophie’s many teething surfaces make her the perfect soother throughout the varied and often arduous stages of teething.
    4.  Miss Brittany’s Organic Preschool Fundough kit

    • Making its second appearance in this spot in the past 3 weeks, Miss Brittany’s Organic Preschool Fundough Kit is one of the best gift buys in the store.  Beautifully packaged with three containers of modeling dough, a rolling pin, wood shape stampers and a kid-sized apron reading “Organically Awesome,” it’s a sure-fire crowd-pleaser.
    5.  Green Toys Cookware & Dining Set

    • Green Toys is a pioneer in the, well, green toys space.  Made from recycled milk jugs, this 27-piece set provides everything necessary for your child to serve their very first sit-down meal.

If nothing here catches your fancy, here’s one more reason to make a last-minute holiday purchase:

Now through Tuesday, December 22, take 20% off EVERYTHING in the store.  Yep, everything.  Just use coupon code lastminute at checkout.

But please remember, if you need your items delivered before Christmas, make sure to select the appropriate shipping option at checkout (especially those of you on the West Coast).  If you have a question about shipping times, please do not hesitate to contact us at 866-456-8342 or customerservice@greenobambino.com.

Fab Five Faves will be taking a holiday next week, so we’ll see you in two.  Enjoy whatever it is you have planned!
